Fable was originally developed for the Xbox and PC by Lionhead Entertainment, home of famed game designer Peter Molyneux, the brains behind legendary “god games” like Populous and Black and White, as well as previous Feral releases like The Movies. Molyneux’s games often deal with the balance between good and evil, and the choices that we make that take us down one path or the other. Fable is no different in that regard: In this RPG, the choices you make directly affect your character.
The plot, in a nutshell, is that you’re a young lad who has been spared from his village’s destruction at the hands of brigands. You’re cast into a reluctant student at an academy where you learn the art and trade of becoming a hero. You’re faced with key decisions along the way—do you steal from people? If so, you’ll develop a reputation as a thief. Do you help a mother with her sick child? If so, you’ll earn the respect and love of the townspeople. Those decisions will have a cumulative effect both on your character’s appearance and abilities, though the game’s designers don’t seek to punish you or reward you one way or the other.
Unlike many RPGs, you don’t start out creating a character with a profession—no level one half-elf lawful evil rangers here. You’re only allowed to play as a male, and as you play, you can decide what your character’s strengths will be, determining for example if they’ll be better and wielding swords or shooting arrows. Again, this will even affect your character’s physical appearance. Emphasise melee combat such as sword fighting early on, and expect to appear more heavily muscled and scarred. Focus on crossbows and expect to have a leaner physique. Focus on magic, and find yourself ultimately covered in arcane tattoos. Eat and drink to excess and develop a gut. It’s quite remarkable. You can even develop friendships and fall in love; there are dozens of hours’ worth of quests and missions to go on; you can also boast of your skill and accept challenges that will give you special rewards. The game plays in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Downloads 1–6 is v. 1.0.1, released in 2009, and is the latest version.
Downloads 1–6 are the parts of a zipped disc image of the game DVD Version 1.0.1
Download 7 is a trimmed down image of the game DVD that mainly contains the large SafeDisc file that the game looks for in order to play. Burn this image to a single layer DVD, mount the DVD, and the game will play. Using the trimmed DVD avoids the unattractive alternative of burning the full game disc image to a double layer DVD to achieve the same outcome. Mounted disc images are not sufficient to play. Also I do not have a No-DVD for this version of the game.
Download 8 is a crack for version 1.0 of the game to make it not need a CD when launched. It does not work with version 1.0.1 (Downloads 1–6) but does work with Downloads 9–14.
Please note:
- When using this crack you'll most likely receive a message saying 'Fable - The Lost Chapters.rsrc' is unable to be patched; this is fine, simply select to skip this file as the crack will still work without patching this particular file.
- It is also recommended to deselect 'Pause iTunes while playing Fable - The Lost Chapters' in the game's options as some users have reported a bug that causes the game to crash due to iTunes compatibility and version 1.0 of the game.
Downloads 9–14 are the parts of a zipped disc image of the game DVD Version 1.0
